Working for Passion or Money

Even the critics of motivational speaking are trying to sell us their beliefs and opinion. We all marketers, we live by selling products, services, opinions, ideas, name it.

I’ve read books by the authors who criticize motivational speaking and there is never any way you will not find one part or another that is motivational. When you stand on the podium to talk to people to take action to achieve one thing or the other, it’s of motivation more than what you are selling them. Who tells you what you are selling them resonate to be a solution or what they are interested in, but one thing is certain, one or two things from your speech will spur them to take action towards achieving whatever is their heart desire.

Role Models are Motivator and are Once Motivated

We all have different paths in life but if you can prove to be a self-made man as we use to say without been directly lift financially, one thing is certain, you will along the way to be the best you can be and achieve been down and feel useless. In that situation, the only thing that get you going is a motivation or called it self-motivation, but self-motivation is unrealistic, it comes out of the content we consume to change our context; books, articles, quotations, seminar workshops, discussion, interactions, etc.

Role models are motivators, not until they called themselves motivational speakers. Even if you are not the type that engages in public speaking, the truth remains that your achievement is a motivation for someone

Who is a Motivational Speaker?

I will not dwell on my understanding of this subject; let me borrow some words from career explorer;

“A motivational speaker, also known as an inspirational speaker, is someone who delivers speeches intending to motivate or inspire the people in the audience. Typically, he or she has a reputation as an expert on the subject being discussed, and will encourage the audience to look at things from a different perspective and to become more attentive to their talents and abilities.”

Let me further quotes from those articles of what motivational speaker do;

“The ultimate goal of a motivational speaker is to change people profoundly on an emotional and/or mental level and to help them make some kind of professional or personal change in their lives and within themselves. People naturally tend to focus on all their problems, and the motivational speaker will help an audience to focus on the many opportunities instead, by using any number of persuasive speech tactics to inspire and motivate.”

My Personal Experience

I struggle to have an advance education, I have a flair for learning and I have a dream of becoming a professor at 30s. Is it possible or achievable, even though I don’t have a sponsor and are not aware I could win a scholarship or focus on my dream doing nothing but that? But one thing is certain, I am aware if I have the financial requirement, that dream is achievable, so I focus on making money after finishing school.

I have a passion for something but focus on working for money rather than the following passion. But guess worth, I failed woefully and put myself in financial trouble I never in my whole life imagine can happen. That’s my first attempts into the world of business after putting aside my business I started after secondary school.

I tried lots of things, work as a barman, a teacher, start a magazine, keep taking one action after another until I started smoothing small to survive that lift me after following the passion that follows the little startup.

Part of what get me started is a motivation of starting with nothing, that is over 12 years ago not like now that starting a business could be by just a Facebook page on my smartphone creating and promoting a brand offering one service or another or selling a product that is not mine for a commission or whatever. It takes motivation for me to start over using ideas I learned out of motivational books I read to take action.

That same business I started 9 years ago with about 5 years challenge in between making the business just approximately 4 years old is still in existent and could make money without my presence and is now fueling the passion I have with developing people and potentials.

But at the end, I sat down one day and realized I am going back to the days of old, I am now doing what I have passion for when I was in school and I wish I understand and follow the business model of converting my passion to business.

Business Model behind a Passion

There is nothing wrong with doing a job or business you have passion for in as much you have good information and knowledge of the business model behind converting such passion into money generating activities.

There is one thing I realized, all activities I did in the past either for passion or for money, if I go into it again today, I will make money out of it with the knowledge and information at hand.

Someone criticizes initiative or social enterprise, I let him know, he has no knowledge about the business model of such activities, we have people who are into it, create a reputation for themselves through that, make money without touching any funds donated for its cause and contribute immensely to the community using one stone to kill three birds.

Either you are working for money or passion, if you lack the knowledge and secret of making money from the business, you will fail. After all, 99% of startup, majority of course for money-making more than passion failed in their first 10 years. Why do they failed, is it because they work for passion or money, are they deceived too? Mr. motivational critics, tell me you have not failed in anything before just because you do it for money.

Either you chose to make money from your talent, hobby, skills, passion, or experience. First thing first learn how to convert it to business and learn the income-generating models that suit your style.

In Conclusion

I may not have first-hand information about the motivation behind Dangote going into the production of cement but one thing is certain, he is passionate about something; to impact, to contribute to the economic development of his nation, to help to build a good house, alleviate people poverty, or love creating jobs.

One thing is that, in attempts to fulfill our passion, we will be in the lookout for opportunities that will be an avenue to achieve it and that is what Dangote did using his connection and power to make money from it.
